This half term, English lessons will focus on the short fantasy story 'The Selfish' by Oscar Wilde. This book, which is beautifully illustrated by Ritva Voutila, revolves around a giant who builds a wall to keep children out of his garden but learns compassion from the innocence of the children. We will focus on reinforcing some of the grammar objectives already covered in Year 5 whilst also introducing some new objectives in preparation for high school. Our Mastery Keys this term:
Our text-based approach to writing will help us to build our writing stamina as we work towards writing a version of the Selfish Giant narrative. |
Pathways to Read

During our reading lessons, we will exlore 'Brightstorm' by Vashti Hardy, a fast-paced fantasy adventure novel. Throughtout this unit, will be concentrating on all of the reading domains as outlined in the 2014 National Curriculum: 2a - give/explain the meaning of words in context 2b - retrieve and record information/identify key details from fiction and non-fiction 2c - summarise main ideas from more than one paragraph 2d - make inferences from the text/explain and justify inferences with evidence from the text 2e - predict what might happen from details stated and implied 2f - identify/explain how information/narrative content is related and contributes to meaning as a whole 2g - identify/explain how meaning is enhanced through choice of words and phrases 2h - make comparisons within the text Our weekly reading sessions also use the VIPERS approach to reading comprehension. |
