History - Romans

The Romans.jpg

We will be exploring the Romans in our Topic lessons and strive to provide as many cross-curricular opportunities as possible. From preparing an authentic Roman stew to (hopefully) marching like Roman soldiers through the streets of Chester, we enjoy bringing this topic to life.

Roman Britain - how do we know about it?

Roman Chester
These amazing pictures shows Roman Chester as it may well have looked in the third century AD.

But how do we know it looked like this? Where is the EVIDENCE?

Images by Chester-based Take 27 - used with permission.

Evidence in Rome?
The Romans left behind lots of evidence about their empire in Rome itself. Many of their buildings are still standing, 2000 years after they were built - although, as you can see from this photo of the Colosseum, they have been damaged over the years.

Watch the video on the right to see what the Colosseum looked like when the Romans ruled their empire - it's at 02:22 minutes.

Evidence in Britain?
Unlike in Rome, in Britain there are no large Roman buildings standing today.
Most of the information we have about their towns, forts and roads has come from archaeology - the study of the past, mainly using artefacts (objects) dug up from the ground. Find out all about it be clicking HERE.

The video below shows Channel 4's Time Team helping out with a dig at the major Roman fort of Isca, in modern Caerleon. This fort was very similar to Deva at Chester - an army base built at the first place from the sea where the river could be crossed.

Watch how the team use 'Geophysics' methods (pictures taken into the ground to show what lies beneath) to decide where to dig their trenches, and the amazing things they find there.

Click the picture below to watch the video - your parents will have to register with Channel 4 for you to watch it, so make sure you ask for their help.

A carved Roman gemstone
This beautiful 'artefact' is a carved gemstone from a finger ring, dug up during Time Team's visit to Caerleon Roman fort in South Wales - see the left of the page for more information.
