Science - Autumn term

Electricity

Electricity.jpg

Our first science unit will build on the work completed in Year 4 on Electricity. During this Y6 topic, we will be:

  • making circuits to solve particular problems
  • carrying out fair tests to explore changes in circuits
  • making circuits that can be controlled
  • using electrical symbols and drawing circuits
  • understanding how swtiches work
  • understanding electrical hazards
  • understanding voltage

These resources from the BBC Bitesize team will support your subject knowlege for this unit of work:

How can you change a circuit?

How do you draw electrical circuits and diagrams?

Circuit videos

Light

During Autumn 2, we will be building on our learning from Year 3. In Y6, we will be:

  • describing with diagrams how light travels in straight lines, either from sources or reflected from other objects into our eyes
  • describing with diagrams how light travels in straight lines past translucent or opaque objects to form a shadow of the same shape.

These resources from the BBC Bitesize team will support your subject knowlege for this unit of work:

What is light?

What is reflection?

How does the eye detect light?

Scientific Enquiry

Throughout the year, we will be using a practical approach to learning: completing investigations and experiements to answer scientific questions. We will be developing our understanding of the five enquiry types which will help us acquire new knowledge.

Working Scientifically

Alongside the five scientific enquiries, we will continue to develop our working scientifically skills. These skills help us to understand the processess which make up an enquiry.

STEM activities

In a world where skills in science, technology, engineering and maths are becoming increasingly important, we must have inquiring minds, logical reasoning and the ability to collaborate. So why not have a go at these practical investigations which make links between these areas? Please click on the image for a list of engaging STEM activities.
