History - A World at War

During the autumn term, we will be learning about World War Two and the Battle of Britain as part of our World at War topic. Having looked at world history in Y5, we will now be looking at how the war and the Battle of Britain was a significant turning point in British history. This fascinating topic will also extend our chronological understanding beyond 1066 and the periods of British history studied in Y4.

Our history lessons will follow an enquiry approach where we will consider the following areas:

  • the build-up to WW2
  • WW2: the early days
  • the Home Front

Our history lessons aim to provide engaging learning opportunities supported by images, videos, texts and artefacts.

If you get chance to do any further research or you have any family stories from WW2, please get in touch and let us know! It would be great to hear about the experiences members of your family had during the Second World War.

Stockport Air Raid Shelter

On Monday 16th September, Y6 will be visiting Stockport Air Raid Shelter to help bring their history learning to life. This is a historical role-play day during which pupils will step back in time to wartime Britain and arrive as evacuees.

We will arrive as evacuees at Stockport Museum to be billeted. Musuem staff will be in role when we arrive, expecting evacuees from The City. The characters we meet will help them learn how be ‘good evacuees’ with a range of hands-on activities and a visit into the war-time tunnels. The staff conduct the day in role and do not respond to anything post-war. The children are asked to wear period dress and and evacuee label to add authenticity to the day and can bring a war-time lunch.
