English - Autumn 2

Pathways to Write

This half term, English lessons will focus on the text 'Can we Save the Tiger' by  Martin Jenkins. This stunning and informative picture book tells us about the threats to the many endangered species on our planet and the need to prevent their extinction. We will focus on reinforcing some of the grammar objectives already covered in Year 5 whilst also introducing some new objectives in preparation for high school.

Our Mastery Keys this term:

  • use a variety of conjunctions and sentence types;
  • use modal verbs and adverbs to indicate degrees of possibility;
  • use brackets, dashes or commas to indicate parenthesis.

Our text-based approach to writing will help us to build our writing stamina as we work towards writing an explanation text about tigers.

Pathways to Read

A Place Called Perfect.jpg

During our reading lessons, we will first exlore the Literacy Company's own text 'Martha's Suitcase'. We will then move onto 'A Place Called Perfectby Helena Duggan.

Alongside weekly Pathways to Read sessions, we will be using VIPERS questioning to further develop our comprehension skills.

Children need to be reading each day to help build their language and comprehension skills. In school, children have access to a wide range of genres from classroom book corners and our extensive KS2 library.

Take a look at our Year 6 recommended reads poster for more reading inspiration.
